Mosquito Behaviour and Disease Control
نویسندگان
چکیده
Mosquitoes vector many important disease pathogens. Controls of mosquito-borne diseases often involve lowering the contact rate between human and vector, and killing the vector. For instance, long lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) act on both of these levels. Unfortunately, these are at best short-term solutions as mosquitoes are known to exhibit resistance to these interventions. Physiological resistance to insecticides and repellents is welldocumented worldwide [1]. However, behavioural resistance (e.g. changing encounter rates) to chemical threats and barriers is often underappreciated even though the importance of mosquito behaviour for disease control was emphasized as early as the 1950s [2]. For instance, it has been shown repeatedly that an increasing proportion of mosquitoes have started blood feeding earlier, before humans retire under their LLINs, essentially avoiding insecticides applied to the net’s surface [2]. Mathematical modelling of mosquito dispersal in a heterogeneous environment.
Mosquito dispersal is a key behavioural factor that affects the persistence and resurgence of several vector-borne diseases. Spatial heterogeneity of mosquito resources, such as hosts and breeding sites, affects mosquito dispersal behaviour and consequently affects mosquito population structures, human exposure to vectors, and the ability to control disease transmission. In this paper, we devel...
متن کاملTransient Population Dynamics of Mosquitoes during Sterile Male Releases: Modelling Mating Behaviour and Perturbations of Life History Parameters
The release of genetically-modified or sterile male mosquitoes offers a promising form of mosquito-transmitted pathogen control, but the insights derived from our understanding of male mosquito behaviour have not fully been incorporated into the design of such genetic control or sterile-male release methods. The importance of aspects of male life history and mating behaviour for sterile-male re...
متن کاملThe Harmonic Convergence of Fathers Predicts the Mating Success of Sons in Aedes aegypti.
During courtship males often communicate information about their fitness to females. The matching of harmonic components of flight tone in male-female pairs of flying mosquitoes, or harmonic convergence, was recently described. This behaviour occurs prior to mating and has been suggested to function in mate selection. We investigated the hypothesis that harmonic convergence is a component of mo...
متن کاملPotential for the Invasive Species Aedes Albopictus and Arboviral Transmission through the Chabahar Port in Iran
Background: Dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses are emerging infectious disease threats wherever suitable vectors, hosts, and habitat are present. The aim of the present study was to use the bioagent transport and environmental modeling system (BioTEMS) to identify the potential for arbovirus-infected Aedes species to invade the Chabahar area in southeastern Iran. Methods: ArcGIS geospatial a...
متن کاملMosquito Control Aerosols’ Efficacy Based on Pyrethroids Constituents
Mosquitoes are found all over the world except in the Antarctica. Mosquitoes are two winged insects that belong to the insect order Dipteran. Members of the genera Aedes, Culex and Anopheles are well known and responsible for bites in humans. Only Female mosquitoes bite. This is because they require blood to assist in vitellogenesis. Feeding behaviour of mosquitoes is either classified as zooph...
